GLACIER

Is anything more intimately entwined with time than ice? Glaciers that form over the course of centuries can melt in a matter of years thanks to warming temperatures. For the last 30 years, we have lost approximately 335 billion tons of ice each year. They are our climate countdown made manifest, complex clocks with a simple, singular message: time is running out.

SANCTUARY

A sanctuary is defined as a consecrated space or one of safety and protection. In the case of wildlife sanctuaries, they are both—for what is a conservation site if not hallowed ground, holy water? A haven where life is free to flourish? They represent not only a "hope spot" for flora and fauna, but for humanity as well, where we can fulfill our most sacred purpose as stewards of the wild.

OCEAN FACTS

ROUGHLY 70% OF THE EARTH IS WATER. WATER ALSO MAKES UP 70% OF THE HUMAN HEART. EVERY OTHER BREATH WE TAKE COMES FROM THE OCEAN, WITH PHYTOPLANKTON AND MARINE PLANTS PRODUCING MORE THAN 50% OF  EARTH'S OXYGEN.

80% OF LIFE ON EARTH IS FOUND IN ITS OCEAN. THE WORLD'S OCEAN CONTAINS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 500,000 AND 10 MILLION MARINE SPECIES.

THE ICE SHEET THAT COVERS 98% OF ANTARCTICA FORMED 25 MILLION YEARS AGO AND HOLDS MORE THAN 70% OF EARTH’S FRESH WATER, AN AMOUNT THAT IF MELTED COULD RAISE GLOBAL SEA LEVEL BY 200 FEET.

CORAL REEFS ARE BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOTS. THEY ARE HOME TO 25% OF ALL SPECIES OF MARINE LIFE, ALTHOUGH THEY COVER LESS THAN 1% OF THE OCEAN FLOOR. MORE THAN 75% OF EARTH'S REEFS EXPERIENCED BLEACHING-LEVEL HEAT STRESS BETWEEN 2014 AND 2017, WHICH PUT THEM AT RISK OF DYING.

ABOUT 8 MILLION METRIC TONS OF PLASTIC ENTER THE OCEAN EACH YEAR AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING UP TO 1 MILLION SEA BIRDS, 100,000 SEA ANIMALS, AND COUNTLESS FISH. PLASTIC DOESN'T DECOMPOSE AND HARMS SEA LIFE EVERY DAY.

LONELY WHALE LAUNCHES CAMPAIGNS THAT JOIN PEOPLE TOGETHER IN TAKING KEY ACTIONS TO SAVE THE OCEAN. IN 2020, THE ANNUAL OCEAN HEROES BOOTCAMP EDUCATED AND INSPIRED 401 YOUTH ACTIVISTS FROM 39 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST OCEAN PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

Lonely Whale is an ocean-focused non-profit co-founded by Adrian Grenier and Lucy Sumner on the principle of radical collaboration. What’s happening to the ocean is a drag, but talking about it doesn’t have to be. Lonely Whale collaborates with partners around the world to change how we talk about ocean conservation and protection. From organizations to influencers and creatives, Lonely Whale launches data-driven campaigns such as the #HydrateLike campaign against plastic pollution and Ocean Heroes Bootcamp that speak to Gen Z, Millennials, and others who have joined Lonely Whale in taking key actions to save the ocean.

Atmos is a biannual climate and culture magazine and online platform founded by Jake Sargent with editor-in-chief William Defebaugh, that tells stories about people and the environment through an art and design lens. Atmos brings readers into the cultural conversation around social and environmental justice, climate solutions, and ecological awareness through stories that are equal parts provocative and approachable, inspiring and alarming, light and enlightening.

“COLLECTIVELY WE ARE CONNECTED. WE ARE ALL CONTRIBUTORS OF THIS PLANET, THIS UNITY IS OUR OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH EARTH. WE HAVE SEEN FIRST HAND HOW MAKING ADJUSTMENTS AND TAKING ACTION CREATES POWER AND PURPOSE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES. WHEN WE MODIFY OUR BEHAVIORS, WE CAN CREATE AN ENHANCED LIFE FOR ALL SPECIES ON LAND AND IN WATER. POLITE WORLDWIDE WAS INSPIRED TO COLLABORATE WITH ATMOS AND LONELY WHALE TO DEEPEN OUR VALUES AS A UNIT OF INSPIRATION. WE FEEL TOGETHER WE COMBINE ASPECTS OF CULTURE, CLIMATE AWARENESS, LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY. OUR COLLECTION REPRESENTS THE NATURAL FIGURES OF THE OCEAN AND THE IMPORTANCE TO PROTECT, AND PRESERVE THEM.” - TAVIA AZZINARO
